Composition Shingles
Composition shingles, also known as asphalt composition shingles, are used on nearly 80% of the residential roofs in Sonoma County.
The basic construction of the composition shingle is a fiberglass mat at the core with an exterior asphalt coating embedded with crushed rock (colored granules). There are many different styles and grades to choose from. The most widely used are called “architectural” or “dimensional”. All manufacturers offer a limited lifetime warranty. A step up from the architectural shingles are the designer shingles. These come in many styles and thicknesses to emulate wood shingles, wood shakes, tile, slate, and other designs. Because of the price premium accompanying these composition shingles, they are usually reserved for composition roofing on custom-built houses. They typically carry a 50-year product warranty.
